Delight Of An Ear Worm

First Published November 13, 2015

I have always been fascinated by words and the images they provoke; music notes count as a close second. And when words and notes combine, I often experience wonderful, wide-ranging emotions that result in a persistent, not unwelcome, earworm for days and weeks on end. It happened to me again this week after participating in a community hymn sing in support of Syrian refugees.

It occurred with the third stanza of the hymn The Love of God. My attempt to visualize this overwhelming imagery of the Divine love expressed in these words fills me with awe: (From a Jewish poem by Rabbi Mayer, adapted by F.M. Lehman)

Could we with ink the ocean fill,

And were the skies of parchment made,

Were every stalk on earth a quill,

And every man a scribe by trade;

To write the love of God above

Would drain the ocean dry;

Nor could the scroll contain the whole,

Though stretched from sky to sky.

Imagine that!!
